10 Tips for Staying Well This Fall

  • Wash your hands frequently.
    Also take care not to touch your eyes, nose or mouth too much.
  • Wear scarves around your neck!
    Cold pathogens are said to enter from the base of the neck in traditional Chinese medicine. Any time you feel a breeze on the back of your neck, move away from it or cover up.
  • Daily direct moxa on the acupuncture point Stomach 36.
    This is one of the strongest Qi boosting points on the body and research in Japan shows that regular moxibustion increases white blood cell count. According to a traditional Japanese saying, “Never go on an long trip with someone who doesn’t burn moxa at Su San Li (ST 36)!”
  • Dry your hair completely before going out.
    Many women neglect drying the hair at the base of the neck making them vulnerable to colds and flu.
  • Daily hydrotherapy in the shower.
    Ending a warm shower with 30 seconds of cold will strengthen the immune system.
  • Eat whole foods that are in season.
    Any plant that is at its peak now contains the Qi that is most nourishing for you at this time: Plants that are particularly associated the metal element have white flesh. E.g. turnips, radishes, apples, pears, ginger.
  • Switch to Cod Liver Oil with Vitamin D for your omega-3 fatty acid supplementation.
    Since daylight becomes more limited, getting vitamin D from food sources will be important until spring. Adequate levels of vitamin D are strongly associated with resistance to the flu. Get your levels checked before beginning supplementation.
  • Get good sleep.
    Your body repairs best at night so allow plenty of time for it to do so. Try to stay with nature on rising and retiring. Darkness is the time to slow down and enter the Yin phase of the day. According to the yogic traditions, any hour of sleep before midnight is worth two hours!
  • Use your Neti Pot.
    Keeping your mucous membranes clean and healthy is key since they are part of the first line of defense against allergens and pathogens.
  • Dry brush your skin.
    A regular routine of dry brushing stimulates the movement of lymph and heightens the protective nature of the skin.
